An outside caliper is a type of caliper that is used when conducting measurements of the external sides of an object. The jaw tips of an outside caliper are curved slightly inward to better align with the exterior portion of a part. Some outside calipers can be adjusted through the use of an adjustable screw, while others require manual adjustments. Outside calipers are particularly useful when the measurement includes a large distance of space, such a pipe with a large diameter. Back to entire glossary
