Thread

A thread is the area of a part that forms a uniform ridge used to convert linear movement to rotational movement and vice versa. Threads come in many different types and identification of the specific type you may be working with is important to functionality. Threads can be located internally, a female thread, or externally, a male thread, on a part. When a thread narrows in diameter along the length of a part it is said to be tapered, and when a thread remains the same diameter along the length of a part it is said to be parallel.
