Machining

Machining is any process by which a piece of material is shaped and sized into a particular portion through cutting, abrasion, carving, or other material removal methods. The system of machining includes three main parts: the machine, the workpiece, and the tool. The industry of machining utilizes precision measurement tools in order to most accurately alter the shape, size, and surface of the desired piece.

Machining processes are classified into four groups. These include turning, milling, drilling, and miscellaneous. The process of turning involves specific rotational movement of the workpiece against a particular tool. Alternatively, milling demands the tool doing the shaping to rotate around the workpiece to accomplish the modification. Drilling operations are when a drill is used to create holes along the workpiece. Miscellaneous machining processes include methods such as boring, broaching, sawing, and burnishing, which can all be used to alter a workpiece in some way.

Precision measurement is a crucial part of the machining industry. When a workpiece requires material to be removed through a machining process, often that requirement is the result of a specific engineered necessity. The measurements and calculations that go into creating the blueprint or guide to be followed during machining operations is an incredibly exact procedure. Precision measurement tools are used both by the engineer completing the calculations as well as the machinist carrying out the specifications on the workpiece. Any slight variation in the correct amount of shaping, sizing, and adjusting steps required for machining could completely alter the final product. Using the best quality precision measurement tools during the machining process ensures that the workpiece is accurately produced.
