What does a chamfer gage actually measure? A chamfer gage is precision measurement tool that measures the top (major) diameter of a chamfer, countersink or tapered hole. When machinists are in need of a chamfer gage to confirm a measurement, Barcor is typically the first company that comes to mind. One of the reasons that Barcor chamfer gages are popular is they do not require a setting master. A setting master can be used to increase the overall accuracy of the gage, but are not required. There is a “Set to” number stamped on the back of each chamfer gage. To set the gage, the user can press the base of the chamfer gage against a flat surface. When pressed against a flat surface, the needle should be pointing to the “set to” number. If the reading is slightly off, the user can rotate the bezel of the indicator until the needle is pointing to the “set to” number and then the gage is ready for use.
