Rules
Quick Answer
A precision rule (also called a machinist’s rule or steel rule) is a hardened, graduated length measurement tool used for layout, measurement, and reference in machining, fabrication, inspection, and engineering. Precision rules are ground and graduated to tight tolerances — significantly more accurate than a standard tape measure or carpenter’s rule — and are a fundamental tool in any machine shop, inspection room, or toolroom.
Higher Precision stocks rules from Starrett, Mitutoyo, INSIZE, Fowler, Brown & Sharpe, and SPI — precision steel rules, flexible rules, hook rules, narrow rules, and combination square rules in inch, metric, and dual graduation, in lengths from 6″ through 72″ for machining, inspection, fabrication, and general measurement applications.
